Review:
Having selections from Vidna Obmana, Robert Rich and other great ambient
artists in my collection, I'm not much of a newcomer to the beauty and entertainment found
in ambient music. This collection ranks up there among the best of them with the dynamic
sounds and the pure collage of imagery, magical elements and raw talent.
This collection consists of four CDs, each of which presents over an hour of music from
one aspect or another in the ambient realm. I'll break it all down by CD as each one takes
you on a relaxing journey through the sounds of City, Live, Night and Sleep.
"City" is the first CD and presents the most dynamic range of
sounds. It includes everything from the soft string chords in "Creeping Emptiness
Over The Street" to the harsh grind of guitars in "A". It also includes a
bit of a techno beat in other songs and synth chords and rhythms in others. There's even a
cute little track with some vocals in "Lizzy Loves Dad". Each track tries to
express a bit of the feeling you might have while in a shopping mall, riding a subway or
walking through a cemetary. All the different aspects of the city are captured in music,
which is very interesting and done quite well.
"Live" is the second CD from this set and are tracks recording
live in 1999. For a live recording, the sound is excellent... each track captures a
certain unique mood. This disc also features various styles with techno-style synth loops
and a bit of a techno beat while others drop into that droning ghost-like voices. This
disc has a few more tribal elements, especially in the track "Last Heat" with
the tribal beat and other instruments.
"Night" is a very good attempt at catching the various moods
the nighttime portrays. Sometimes exhibiting feelings of loneliness or being lost, while
at others the more unsettling feeling of fear settles in. And it's all done through more
ethereal and ambient moods than the previous two disc. "Nightfall" and some
other tracks still have a bit of a tribal beat while others sink more into the depths of a
mysterious subconscious.
"Sleep" is my favorite in many ways, but mostly in its relaxing
quality, as you can imagine from the given title. This disc isn't broken down into
meaningful titles, but rather is broken down as "Sleep Well" and each track
becoming a part of that mood. As can be expected, there is a bit of repetition throughout
the music as it ebbs in and out of consciousness. This is an excellent expression in music
of what sleep really is. And I also have to add, that if you've ever had a long and
stressful day, you can lay down, put on this disc and your stress will seep away, at least
for a time, as the music carresses and sooths your troubled mind.
For ambient music fans, and any of those wanting to get into this musical genre a bit
more, this collection is an excellent introduction.
